Clause 6.2.2: Planning to achieve OH&S objectives
In planning how its OH&S objectives will be reached, the organization decides what is to be done, what resources it needs, who is responsible, when the work will be finished, how the results will be judged (including the indicators used to track them), and how the actions will fit into business processes.
What clause 6.2.2 asks
In planning how its OH&S objectives will be reached, the organization decides what is to be done, what resources it needs, who is responsible, when the work will be finished, how the results will be judged (including the indicators used to track them), and how the actions will fit into business processes. Documented information on the objectives and the plans is kept.
An objective without resources, an owner and a date is a wish. This clause turns each objective into a plan that a finance director and a site manager can both recognise.
Budget the equipment, the time and the support. Remote work has a cost line: equipment, furniture, connectivity, training, manager time and mental health support. The public consultation says the guidance is for organizations of all sizes and sectors, so the plan has to be proportionate, but it still has to be resourced. The ISO abstract names a healthy and safe work environment and a balance between work and life, both of which need time and money.
Basis: ISO, BSI. For clause 6.2.2, the public record is a draft guideline and does not state a requirement in terms that this site can quote. The clause 6.2.2 overlay is our reading of the public scope and the named summaries, not the draft text.
Evidence for clause 6.2.2
An auditor will ask who paid for the plan, who owns it, when it finishes and what indicator moves if it works.
- Planning Action plans per objective with resources, owners, dates and indicators
- Planning Evidence of integration into budgets and operational plans
- Planning Progress reviews against indicators
Where clause 6.2.2 commonly fails
- Objectives set with no plan behind them
- Indicators undefined so progress cannot be evaluated
- Plans not resourced
What to do about clause 6.2.2 before the guidance lands
Put a cost, a named owner and a date against every remote objective. Show where the budget sits and what happens if it is not approved. Include the worker's time for assessment and training in the plan.
For clause 6.2.2, do the work that will be right under either instrument. The current requirement for clause 6.2.2 is ISO 45001:2018, and the certificate, if you hold one, is issued against it. The clause 6.2.2 remote working preparation is an extension of the existing duty to a group of workers the system already covers, not a new system and not a reason to rebuild around a draft.
