Clause 8.1.4.2: Contractors
The organization aligns its procurement processes with its contractors so that hazards are identified and the OH&S risks are assessed and controlled where they come from three sources: contractor activities and operations that affect the organization; the organization's own activities and operations that affect contractor workers; and contractor activities and operations that affect other interested parties at the workplace.
What clause 8.1.4.2 asks
The organization aligns its procurement processes with its contractors so that hazards are identified and the OH&S risks are assessed and controlled where they come from three sources: contractor activities and operations that affect the organization; the organization's own activities and operations that affect contractor workers; and contractor activities and operations that affect other interested parties at the workplace. It makes sure contractors and their workers satisfy what its OH&S management system requires, and its procurement processes set and apply OH&S criteria for choosing contractors.
Contractor control has three directions: the contractor's work affecting the organization, the organization's work affecting the contractor, and the contractor's work affecting others at the workplace.
Contractors who work remotely. A contractor working from home or at a client site brings the same hazards and adds a coordination problem. The organization has to exchange the hazard information, agree who controls what and check the arrangement before the work starts. The public scope's client-site and mobile-role coverage makes this a live question, not an edge case.
Basis: BSI Standards Development, BSI. For clause 8.1.4.2, the public record is a draft guideline and does not state a requirement in terms that this site can quote. The clause 8.1.4.2 overlay is our reading of the public scope and the named summaries, not the draft text.
Evidence for clause 8.1.4.2

- Contractor management Pre-work hazard exchange and risk assessments between the organization and contractors
- Contractor management Contractor induction and monitoring records
- Contractor management Evidence contractors' workers are covered by the system's requirements
Where clause 8.1.4.2 commonly fails
- Contractors selected on price with no OH&S criteria
- Risks the organization's operations pose to contractors not assessed
- No monitoring of contractor performance during the work
What to do about clause 8.1.4.2 before the guidance lands
Add remote and client-site work to the contractor assessment. Exchange the hazards in writing, agree the emergency and reporting route, and record the site or location rules. Check the arrangement before the first day and when it changes.
For clause 8.1.4.2, do the work that will be right under either instrument. The current requirement for clause 8.1.4.2 is ISO 45001:2018, and the certificate, if you hold one, is issued against it. The clause 8.1.4.2 remote working preparation is an extension of the existing duty to a group of workers the system already covers, not a new system and not a reason to rebuild around a draft.
